I know this German show as well and it was very good in the 90s...But to be honest I would not participate and put my life in the hands of a guy with a 20 ton excavator...

There is (or at least there was when I lived in Austria in the early 80's) a similar German TV show called "Wetten dass", meaning approximately "I bet that ...". They had similar stunts. A few I remember are
- a guy in a kayak doing maybe 100 rolls (sideways) in a minute
- a guy who could open beer bottles with a scissors faster than a bartender with a bottle opener
- a guy who could recognize cities based only on a map of their subway system.

I found the show charming and surprisingly funny.
